In 1955 Cyprus is torn apart by a military campaign. Ariadne and young British officer Stephen Allenby meet and fall in love, but when it becomes known, he is sent home. In 1998 his daughter, Cressida, now 36 travels to Northern Cyprus to seek answers to the pain-filled memories of her father's disappearance.

Occupied France is a dangerous place for two teenagers, especially when they are the children of a French mother and a British father. Desperate to get back to England, they take refuge on a canal barge, but they find themselves immersed in the complex Operation Kingfisher, a risky escape to see Allied airmen safely back to England via the canals...
