Sebastian is nineteen and heir to a large country estate. Although his sense of tradition binds him to his inheritance he dislikes the social circus he is part of. Two people, Lady Roehampton ansd Leonard Anquetil, a polar explorer, lead Sebastian and his sister to question their destiny.

One day Liz Headleand receives a mysterious parcel, with Cambodian stamps, that contains a finger bone and scraps of writing by her friend, the novelist Stephen Cox. Enlisting the help of Hattie Osborne, another of his friends, Liz attempts to decipher his trail.

A TV war correspondent loses her greatest love and is confronted by suspicions about his double life.
