The novel is told by two women, Anne Boleyn, mistress and Queen of Henry VIII and Lucy Cornwallis, the King’s confectioner. They are linked by Mark Smeaton, a lowly court musician, whose alleged adultery with Anne Boleyn brought about her downfall.
