Dacia Maraini

This novel tells the story of five generations of the Ucria family seen through the eyes of deaf-mute Duchess Mariana. Set apat by her disability and married at 13 to her uncle, she tries to find fulfilment in a society where a woman’s lot is either marriage and childbirth or life behind the walls of a convent.
