On the way to see a client, Maisie Dobbs witnesses a man commit suicide on a busy London street. Maisie is invited into Scotland Yard's elite Special Branch as an adviser on the case and becomes involved in a race against time to find a man who proves he has the knowledge, and will, to murder thousands of innocent people.

Called in to investigate the disappearance of a rich man's 18-year-old daughter, Maisie discovers there are many reasons why the young woman might have left home. Maisie feels the daughter is safe, but is suddenly confronted by a murder scene.

At the onset of World War 1 Maisie Dobbs goes to the front as a nurse and when hostilities cease, she sets up on her own as a private investigator. Her first assignment soon reveals a dark web of secrets which will force Maisie to revisit the horrors of the Great War.

Maisie Dobbs investigates the case of a veteran of the Great War, a controversial artist who fell to his death the night before the opening of an exhibition of his work.
