Journalist Rona Parish is researching some of the long-established family firms in Marsborough after meeting her old friend Kate who has married into one, the Tarltons. Kate’s sister-in-law is having terrible nightmares that may be due to a buried childhood memory – Rona investigates.

Rona Parish is hired to write a series of articles for the town of Buckford's 500-year anniversary. As she interviews people she hears about a recent murder and is immediately aware that there are several unresolved issues surrounding the case.

When Louise comes to Rona with a plea for help, all her journalistic instincts are aroused. Against her better judgement - and husband Max's advice - Rona is drawn into a complex and disturbing sequence of events.

When she finds Curzon, the manufacturers of fine bone china, are launching a spectacular new line Rona Parish contacts them. Little does she realize she will be taking part in a terrible tragedy whose roots go back to George Curzon, son of the founder member also know as "The Rogue in Porcelain".
