In Suffolk 1943, once sleepy villages are now home to scores of bomber bases, manned by thousands of US airmen. For evacuee Billy Street this offers the opportunity to be accepted into a community, but for his teacher, Heather Garrett, and Lt. John Hooper the American invasion brings only upheaval and uncertainty!

On December 31st 1942, an Atlantic convoy has reached the deadly 'gap', where it cannot be protected by aircraft. The white flash they see at midnight means only one thing - a German torpedo. That New Year is etched forever on the memories of the survivors.
