Jack, a mongrel sheepdog, is found guarding his dying master after a bloody World War 1 battle. He transfers his loyalty to Captain Daly and the Dublin Fusiliers. Jack's presence and bravery brings hope to the young soldiers.

Defying the iron will of his grandmother Ben Logan leaves Ireland for Yorkshire where he meets Lesley, a social worker; Anagram, a pedigree horse, and Meg, a border collie. Each will change his life bringing love, tragedy and hope.
