Nancy Cameron is sent from her home in Canada to Woodmaston House, a girls boarding school in England. Although she wins friends easily, Nancy still feels very alone, and boarding school isn't the story book fantasy she imagined.

Yangtze is near a small town in Quebec, Canada and best friends Nancy, Clare and Amy live in the neighbourhood. Sandra and Tracy are sisters who live nearby but Nancy thinks they are weird, and always wonders why their house is such a horrible place to be?
