After the First World War British diplomat, Hugh Thurne, returns to his second home in Venice. He looks forward to visiting his old friends Giacomo and Valentina Venier, but he does not anticipate the shadow lying over the Venier family.

After marrying an Italian medical student in the 1930s, Kate Fenton finds herself living in Tuscany during World War II. With her brother and brother-in-law in opposing armies and her husband imprisoned , her loyalties are divided.
