The Great Blaskett lies off the west coast of Ireland. In 1953 it was abandoned by its remaining inhabitants as they emigrated to America. This book follows the fate of one family as they search for a new life after the disintegration of their community.

The author was brought up worshipping the deeds and the heroes of the Second World War. He often tried to quiz his father about these times, but had no success. As he uncovers the truth behind his family's past he brings to life the realities of a poverty-striken post-war London.
