Farmer's boy fights for survival of family's farm.

Cathy and Roger long for their own pony. When they find an old, almost life-sized toy pony and cart in a junk shop, they buy it for a penny and name him Prince. The children, especially Cathy, become attached to Prince, seeing him as a substitute for a real live animal. The story revolves around their adventures with Prince and how their initial disappointment turns into something magical.

Moll Swayne is a magical creature to her children - the Queen of the Pharisees, who dances in the fairy ring. The family lead a gypsy like existence in the forest until Sim is accussed of vagrancy. It is young Will who feels the force of the change that befalls the Queen of the Pharisees' children.
