Verity Browne appeals to Lord Edward Corinthe to investigate a murder and save her lover from the firing squad in Madrid. He succeeds, and back in London is involved in the case of a murdered banker. Soon he discovers that the two killings, and an earlier shooting in Kenya, are all connected.

In 1935 the Duke of Mersham hosts a dinner to promote Anglo-German relations. When a prominent guest dies and other deaths follow, the Duke's brother, Lord Edward Corinth, and Verity Browne, a journalist, determine to find out who is the murderer.
