Guy Mannering is an astrologer who only half-believes in his art. Instead he places his faith in patriarchal power, wealth and social position. However the Scotland of this novel is a nation in which the old hierarchies are breaking down and each social group lives by its own laws.

Scott's noble knight, Ivanhoe, returns home from the Crusades to claim Rowena, an Anglo-Saxon princess, to be his bride. Before long he is embroiled in the struggle between Prince John and his brother Richard the Lionheart.

In the court of Elizabeth I, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, is favoured by the Queen and it is rumoured that she may choose him for her husband. But Leicester has secretly married the beautiful Amy Robsart. Fearing ruin if this were known, he keeps his lovely young wife a virtual prisoner in an old country house.

This classic narrative poem, set in the Trossachs region of Scotland, is composed of six cantos, each of which concerns the action of a single day. The poem has three main plots: the contest among three men to win the love of Ellen Douglas; the feud and reconciliation of King James V of Scotland and James Douglas; and a war between the lowland Scots and the highland clans.
