Chief Superintendent Troy returns in a story set in the East End of London in the 1950s which is increasingly being dominated by the new post-war gangs.

In 1956 with the Cold War at its height Khrushchev visits England and Chief Inspector Troy is assigned as his bodyguard.

In 1938 journalist Rod Troy is in Vienna for the English press. After Kristallnacht the Jews start to leave, but in 1940 those in England are rounded up as 'enemy aliens', along with Rod Troy. Rod's brother has been seconded from CID to Special Branch, but when a lunatic starts killing rabbis in the East End he returns to his true calling - murder.

When the Russians started building the Berlin wall in 1961, two 'Unfortunate Englishmen' were trapped on opposite sides. Geoffrey Masefield in the Lubyanka, and Bernard Alleyn (alias KGB Captain Leonid Liubimov) in Wormwood Scrubs. In 1965 there is a new plan. To exchange the prisoners, a swap upon Berlin's bridge of spies...
