It is the end of the reign of Elizabeth I. William Marsden is determined to save a servant girl who has been condemned to death. Within the account of his adventures is Mary Queen of Scots as she faces execution.

The Marsden family are in financial trouble. If they can’t pay their debts they will lose their home. With this in mind Will, his father and their serving girl set sail for London with a cargo of coal.

Queen Elizabeth I is dying and England is in turmoil. Young Will and his friend Meg set off to London to clear his family name and are confronted by obstacles such as the magician Doctor Dee, a man much admired by the queen.
