Dr Temperance Brennan is called to a landfill site in north Carolina. A barrel of hardened asphalt has been discovered, with a human hand poking through the top. It is up to Tempe to try to identify the body, but the trail she sets in motion leads her to one of America's largest fascist organisations, and it could threaten her own life...
