Middlemarch

Dorothea Brooke marries the pedantic scholar Casaubon, in a quest for intellectual fulfilment. The marriage is unhappy but after his death she is trapped by the terms of his will. Other characters include the charming Dr Lydgate and the religious hypocrite Bulstrode.
