Crippled by polio, Winnie Molloy has little to look forward to. At the start of the war her adored father is called up and she is left with her feckless mother. When Tommy is declared missing, her mother goes on a drinking spree and dies. Winnie, alone and loveless, is sent to an orphanage, will her life ever improve?
