Anna had a magical childhood in Shanghai as the daughter of an expatriate millionaire in the 1930s. With war looming Anna and her mother return to California, but Joseph stayed believing, mistakenly, that his connections would keep him safe. Anna grows up without her father, but many years later Joseph suddenly re-appears.
