Despite being crippled by a debt left by her husband, Lizzie Conway has managed to claw her way out of the slums of the Gorbals to give her daughters, Polly, Babs and Rosie, a better life. Lizzie finds it hard to protect her daughters once they have grown up, but she realises that they have inherited her strength and determination.
