Short stories of magic and mystery that have been collected and retold in this anthology of twelve fairy tales from Europe. 

The witches in this book can fly through the air on broomsticks, or on stalks of ragwort, or even on old jars. They can raise tempests and cross the sea in sieves. They can turn themselves and other people into pigs, or geese, or anything they please. Most of them are hook-nosed and hump-backed; some are very beautiful; and almost all of them are bad. However, witches have at least one thing in common with giants and dragons – they can almost always be outwitted by someone brave and good.
